Basically, I set the drain plug on the screen thingy that’s on the top of the oil changer thingy after you remove the lid. Then, dropped the filter on it with approximately the force of 1000 suns. This caused the screen to drop into the pan of used oil, along with the drain plug. With no other option, I stuck my hand in to retrieve the drain plug.

Note that this was on my bike, using Motul 300v. The reasons why the fact that I’m using this particular oil is important to the story is 1) EXTREME RACING PERFORMANCE and 2) It’s green and smells like bananas.

Below is a totally accurate image of what I looked like prior to my little mishap, of reaching my arm into a container of used, green, banana-smelling-like oil:

Magnet on a stick, i thought such a simple tool was almost required for any bike work, since there’s sooooo many little spots to lose a bolt or nut into?

Need to get one of those. Never had a need for one yet, although I mainly do only oil / brakes / tires.

I’ve two LED torches, each has a flexible retractable section with a strong magnet on the end. Very strong and worth every penny.

Best tool in the toolbox. Also, we call it the same thing.

I think there’s a market for a premium tool called “Magnet On A Stick”. It seems to me like it could be the next great brand. Look out Apple!

Magnet on a stick, with a sandwich baggie around it for easier cleanup! Works great for metal shavings you don’t want permanently on the magnet too.

No nitrile gloves?

MOST important tool for changing oil.

Magnet on a stick is for fancy 1 percenters. I use wooden chopsticks. It’s a bit harder to get out, but oh so satisfying, and they can be kept for a few oil changes then thrown away.
